Centuries whisper from these timeworn stones. We are standing before the Zidul Curții Domnești a lui Radu de la Afumați. This is a place where history and legend intertwine.

Radu de la Afumați ruled Wallachia. His reign spanned from 1522 to 1529. He earned his name “de la Afumați” because he possessed an estate in Afumați.

Radu’s rule was not continuous. It was interrupted several times. Yet his battles helped preserve Romanian national identity. He is remembered as a ruler who defended his land.

Imagine a time when the Ottoman Empire sought control. They wanted to transform the country into a Turkish province. Radu de la Afumați rose to the challenge. He fought against the Turks. His talent for organizing battles was remarkable. Radu managed to thwart the plans of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

Between 1522 and 1525 fierce battles raged. The Turks clashed with Vladislav III and Radu Bădica. These pretenders to the throne were supported by the Ottomans. Radu de la Afumați fought valiantly. An inscription on his tomb mentions 20 battles.

For a time Radu submitted to the Sultan. However he tried to resume his anti-Ottoman policy. In April 1529 he was killed with his son Vlad. The assassination happened in the Cetățuia church. Boyars Neagoe and Drăgan committed this act.

Today the Zidul Curții Domnești a lui Radu de la Afumați stands as a reminder. It reminds us of a turbulent era. These ruins are located near the Pasărea rivulet. They are 300 meters west of the Afumați-Petrăchioaia road.

Afumați is proud of its history. In 2010 the commune celebrated 500 years of recorded existence. A film was made to showcase its heritage. The Zidul Curții Domnești is one of the historical treasures.

The Zidul Curții Domnești a lui Radu de la Afumați is more than just old stones. It represents resilience. It embodies a spirit of resistance. It echoes the struggles of a leader who fought for his land. The Zidul Curții Domnești stands as a symbol of national pride.
