Could this modern district hide ancient secrets? Zhucun, also known as Pearl Village, sits in Guangzhou’s Tianhe district. It is an urban village today. Its roots stretch back to the Southern Song Dynasty.

Tianhe seems modern with brand stores and high rises. Yet, Zhucun holds a wealth of history.

To get to Zhucun, take the metro to a nearby station. Then hop in a taxi. Alternatively, several BRT buses stop at the Zhu Cun station. Look for buses B1, B5, B15, B16, B17, B20, B26 or B27.

Initially, you might feel skeptical entering Zhucun. Can anything ancient be found here? Getting lost in the small alleys is part of the experience. Allocate a few hours to wander around.

Some might ask why stay in Guangzhou. Why not move to Beijing with its famous Forbidden City? But Guangzhou offers its own unique charm. Everyday life here is an important part of culture. These villages, dating back to emperors’ times, are rich pieces of history. Culture includes everything we do. From breakfast to clothing to evening TV.

Zhucun boasts many ancient sites. There are 44 cultural relic buildings, 33 ancestral halls, and 8 society temple altars. You might not enter all of them. Locals often use them for playing poker and mahjong.

The Chinese Valentine’s Day is the best time to visit Zhucun. It falls on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month. It will be on August 2nd. This festival celebrates the legend of the cowherd and the weaver girl.

The tale tells of Zhinu, the weaver girl, and Niulang, the cowherd. Their love was forbidden. They were banished to opposite sides of the Milky Way. Once a year, magpies form a bridge. This reunites the lovers for one day.

Legend says couples falling in love in Zhucun will have eternal romance. Many couples visit the village. The Qixi Festival is important for both singles and married couples. Young girls worship the celestials. They wish for a good and loving husband. The festival symbolizes a happy marriage. It shows the married woman is treasured.

During the festival, the old temples and buildings overflow with decorations. Miniature houses, people, and other objects are on display. Everything is also for sale. Locals gather for lunch during Qixi. Tables are set up in front of the family temples. A local TV station covers the event.

Zhucun offers a glimpse into Guangzhou’s past. It blends ancient traditions with modern life. It offers a unique cultural experience.
