Over a thousand years of history whispers from these walls. Welcome to Zhongnanhai.

For centuries Zhongnanhai was a royal garden. It was a place of exceptional beauty. Emperors enjoyed its tranquil lakes. Now it is the heart of China’s government. The State Council and the Communist Party headquarters reside here.

Zhongnanhai’s history is rich and complex. It began in the Liao and Jin Dynasties. The Yuan Ming and Qing Dynasties expanded it. The Ming Dynasty made Beijing the capital. Zhongnanhai became a political center and imperial resort. The last emperor Puyi even had a palace built here.

After the Qing Dynasty ended Zhongnanhai continued its role as a political center. It became the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party in 1949. Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai lived and worked within these walls. The founding of the People’s Republic of China was decided here. The name of the country the national flag and the national anthem were all chosen in Zhongnanhai.

Between 1977 and 1985 parts of Zhongnanhai were open to the public. Ordinary people could visit this once-forbidden place. Now it is again a place of mystery and solemnity. Only state leaders and their guests are allowed inside.

Many important buildings stand within Zhongnanhai. The Xinhua Gate the main entrance is a symbol of power. It bears slogans proclaiming the glory of the Communist Party. Inside the slogans continue. Mao’s words Serve the People appear prominently.

The lakes within Zhongnanhai are called seas. They were once part of a larger lake system. Now the Central and Southern Seas make up Zhongnanhai. The Northern Sea forms part of Beihai Park.

Zhongnanhai’s buildings have seen significant changes over the years. Some retain names from earlier eras but their functions have been completely transformed. The complex is divided into two sections. The Northern section is for the State Council. The Southern section houses the Communist Party Central Committee. Here major decisions affecting the nation are made. Here state banquets are held for important foreign guests.

Despite its inaccessibility Zhongnanhai remains a powerful symbol of China. It represents the country’s leadership. Its history is interwoven with the rise and fall of empires and the creation of the modern Chinese state. It’s a place of great power a place of history a place that continues to shape the destiny of China.
