Hidden in the southeastern corner of Dongguan City lies Zhangmutou Town. It’s a place with a history as rich and layered as the ancient camphor trees that once dotted its landscape. Zhangmutou Town wasn’t always known by this name. In the Ming Dynasty, it was called Taian. It wasn’t until the Qing Dynasty, when camphor trees flourished throughout the area, that it earned its current moniker, Zhangmutou, literally meaning “camphor tree head”. Zhangmutou Town boasts a fascinating blend of old and new. Modern flats rise against a backdrop of nearly 500 years of history. The town’s location is a key part of its allure. Just 38 kilometers from Shenzhen and 40 from Huizhou, it offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city life. Yet its proximity keeps it connected to the pulse of the region. This unique position has made it a popular destination for expats and retirees, especially those seeking a more affordable alternative to Hong Kong. As of 2014, Zhangmutou Town encompassed an area of 118.78 square kilometers. The Shima River, a tributary of the Dongjiang River, winds its way through the town. Near Zhangmutou, a uniquely shaped boulder, resembling a horse, gave the river its name. The town is also home to two main reservoirs, Liuzhupai and Shannan, vital sources of water. In terms of industry, Zhangmutou Town has evolved significantly. In 2019, its GDP reached an impressive 13.21 billion yuan. The town is particularly known for its thriving plastics industry, with a massive trading market spanning over 250,000 square meters. This market, coupled with supporting infrastructure, has cemented Zhangmutou Town’s reputation as a hub for plastic trade. Beyond industry, Zhangmutou Town boasts beautiful parks like Guanyinshan Forest Park and Riverside Park. These green spaces provide welcome respite and add to the town’s charm. So the next time you find yourself near Dongguan, make sure to visit Zhangmutou Town. You’ll discover a hidden gem where history, nature, and industry intertwine to create a truly unique experience.
