Zhang Tailei was born in Changzhou in June 1898. He tragically died in Guangzhou on December 12, 1927. He was one of the early leaders of the Chinese Communist Party. He organized the Guangzhou Uprising in 1927.
Zhang studied at Beiyang University in Tianjin. He participated in the May Fourth Movement. He became a member of one of the first communist cells in Beijing. He organized an evening school for railway workers in Beijing.
In 1921, the Comintern brought him to Moscow. He became the director of the China Department of the Far East Bureau of the Comintern. He accompanied Comintern representatives to meetings with Li Dazhao and Chen Duxiu. These meetings led to the founding of the Chinese Communist Party.
Upon his return to China, Zhang participated in the First National Congress of the Socialist Youth Leagues of China. The 25 delegates elected him as Secretary-General. On September 4, 1922, he joined the Kuomintang.
Subsequently, he was elected as a non-standing member of the Politburo. He became Secretary of the South China Bureau of the Communist Party. He also chaired the Military Committee. Despite his revolutionary inclinations, he married a woman from the countryside. His family arranged the marriage following Chinese tradition.
Zhang supported organizing uprisings in cities. These uprisings aimed to overthrow the government in favor of the communists. He took charge of organizing the Guangzhou Uprising. The uprising broke out in December 1927. It resulted in the establishment of the Guangzhou Commune. Zhang was elected chairman. He died during an attack by the Kuomintang on his office.
