Whispers of history echo through the Zerzabelshofer Forst. This isn’t just a forest. It’s a living tapestry woven with threads of nature, industry, and echoes of Nuremberg’s past. Located south of Mögeldorf and Laufamholz, and east of Zerzabelshof, the Zerzabelshofer Forst is a part of the Lorenzer Reichswald. This vast woodland breathes history. Imagine the workers who once quarried Burgsandstein here, the very stone that rebuilt Nuremberg’s iconic Lorenzkirche and city walls. Their labor echoes in the silent, abandoned quarries scattered across the Schmausenbuck ridge. This area served a much different purpose in the mid-20th century. A prison camp stood here, where inmates toiled in a tree nursery and animal breeding facility. They labored under the open sky during the day, only to return to their cells each night. Now, only remnants whisper of this era. The Zerzabelshofer Forst is also a natural sanctuary. Numerous streams trickle through the forest, feeding the Hutgraben, which in turn flows into the Valznerweiher and eventually becomes the Goldbach. The highest point here is the Klingenberg, rising 379 meters above sea level. From its slopes, the Buchenklinge, a spring encased in stone, offers a cool, refreshing drink to those who pause to listen to its story. The Zerzabelshofer Forst is more than just trees and trails. It’s a place where the past intertwines with the present, offering a unique glimpse into the heart of Nuremberg’s history.
