Why is this mountain refuge named after a city slicker? We are standing before the Zeppezauerhaus, a charming mountain hut nestled on the slopes of the Untersberg. It’s named after Dr. Moritz Zeppezauer, a prominent figure in the Salzburg chapter of the Austrian Alpine Club. You see, the Zeppezauerhaus has a fiery past. The original structure, simply called the Untersberghaus, opened in 1883. It quickly became a beloved rest stop for hikers. But tragedy struck in 1912 when a faulty stove caused a devastating fire, reducing the building to ashes. Undeterred, the Alpine Club rebuilt the hut in 1914, this time naming it after Zeppezauer to honor his dedication to the mountains. Today, the Zeppezauerhaus stands as a testament to resilience and the enduring spirit of mountain enthusiasts. It’s a place where hikers can find refuge, enjoy breathtaking views of Salzburg, and create new stories against the backdrop of the majestic Untersberg.
