Tucked away in Brandenburg, yet just a stone’s throw from Berlin, lies Zepernick, a place brimming with history. Zepernick whispers tales of ancient settlements, echoes of Slavic heritage, and the rumble of passing trains. Zepernick first appears in records in 1289 as “Cepernik,” meaning “dense shrubbery” in Slavic. Imagine Zepernick in its early days, a small village nestled amidst thickets, its inhabitants living off the land. Centuries passed, and Zepernick grew. By 1375, Zepernick boasted 52 hufen, approximately 758 hectares, as documented in Emperor Charles IV’s land register. The village witnessed the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War, enduring plundering and devastation in 1635. Yet, Zepernick persevered. A school was established around 1700, and a new one built near the St. Annen Church in 1835. The arrival of the Berlin-Stettiner Eisenbahn in the 1840s marked a turning point. Zepernick gained its own railway station in 1888, further connecting it to the burgeoning metropolis of Berlin. This connection would shape Zepernick’s destiny. In the 20th century, Zepernick became part of the Gemeinde Panketal in 2003. The St. Annen Church, a beautiful example of architecture, stands as a testament to Zepernick’s enduring spirit. Zepernick even hosts the Randfestspiele, a unique cultural event that celebrates music, art, and the connection between Germany and Korea. From a small Slavic village to a thriving community within Panketal, Zepernick continues to evolve, its story woven into the fabric of Brandenburg and the vibrant tapestry of Berlin’s surroundings.
