“A city of stones,” a visitor once murmured, gazing across Zentralfriedhof Lüneburg. “But what stories do they whisper?” Indeed, Zentralfriedhof, established in 1876, holds the quiet tales of Lüneburg’s past. This 12.9-hectare expanse on Soltauer Straße in the Stadtteil of Mittelfeld is the final resting place for thousands. It offers a poignant glimpse into the lives and times of those who shaped this city. Originally under the care of St. Johannis Church, Zentralfriedhof arose from necessity. The older Gertrudenfriedhof and St. Antonifriedhof could no longer accommodate the growing city. After much deliberation, this larger, collective cemetery was born. The first burial took place in 1876. A few years later, in 1883, the neo-Gothic chapel was consecrated, adding a touch of solemn beauty to the grounds. The cemetery continued to expand between 1907 and 1933. Eventually, in 1966, the city of Lüneburg assumed control of Zentralfriedhof. However, it wasn’t until 1983 that it was reopened for burials. Zentralfriedhof isn’t merely a place of mourning. It’s also a historical record. Among the 15,000 gravestones are those of prominent figures like several Oberbürgermeisters: Ernst Braune, Erich Dieckmann, Georg Keferstein, Otto Lauenstein, Horst Nickel, Jens Schreiber, and Wilhelm Wetzel. You’ll also find the grave of Marga Jess, Germany’s first female master goldsmith, a testament to a pioneering spirit. Zentralfriedhof bears witness to darker times as well. Six war grave sites, including one for victims of the 1943 Hamburg firestorm, serve as stark reminders of the devastating impact of war. Every year, a memorial service is held on Volkstrauertag at Ehrenhain III, led by the VDK, ensuring that the memory of these victims lives on. Zentralfriedhof Lüneburg is more than a cemetery. It is a living archive, a place of reflection, and a testament to the enduring spirit of a city and its people.
