Gazing upon Zeloforamagno, can you envision its humble beginnings? Zeloforamagno wasn’t always part of Peschiera Borromeo. It started as a small agricultural village named Zelo. This area, known as Zeloforamagno, was historically part of the Pieve di San Donato. Zelo shared its borders with several other villages. These were Mezzate and Peschiera to the north, Robbiano to the east, Bolgiano to the south, and Foramagno to the west. Records from 1751 show a modest population of 100 residents in Zelo. During the Napoleonic era, Zelo, with its grown population of 300, merged with Foramagno. This created a combined community of 460 people. Later, in 1811, this unified village became a part of Peschiera Borromeo. Interestingly, these villages briefly regained independence under the Kingdom of Lombardo-Veneto. However, in 1841, under Austrian rule, Zelo and Foramagno were permanently united. This happened by decree of Emperor Ferdinand. He recognized the efficiency of some Napoleonic measures. The unusual double name, Zeloforamagno, served a purpose. It helped distinguish the village from other similar-sounding places in the region. By 1853, Zeloforamagno’s population reached 540. This slightly decreased to 536 by 1861. Zeloforamagno eventually lost its independence in 1870. It was annexed by Mezzate, later renamed Linate. Linate ultimately became part of Peschiera Borromeo. This completed the cycle, reflecting the earlier Napoleonic arrangements. Zeloforamagno, once a small village, has left its mark on the region’s history. Today, when we say Zeloforamagno, we refer to this specific district within Peschiera Borromeo, southwest of the main town, towards San Donato Milanese.
