“Imagine stepping back in time without a DeLorean” I say. Welcome to Zeitschleife in Hamburg. This gallery offers a unique journey. It blends art and history.

Hamburg’s story is rich. It began in the 9th century. It was a mission settlement for the Saxons. The city grew into a major European trading hub. Its port location and independence helped.

The city was once part of the Hanseatic League. It was a free imperial city in the Holy Roman Empire. From 1815 to 1866, Hamburg was a sovereign state. It joined the German Confederation. Later, it became part of the North German Confederation. Then, the German Empire.

Even during the Weimar Republic, Hamburg remained a state. Under Nazi Germany, it became a city-state and a Gau. After World War II, it was in the British Zone. It then became a state in West Germany.

The name Hamburg has old roots. Ptolemy called the settlement Treva. A fortress was named Hammaburg. “Burg” means fortress. “Hamma” might mean angle or pastureland. It could refer to a river’s curvature.

In 808 AD, Emperor Charlemagne ordered a castle built. This was to defend against Slavic and Viking attacks. His son Louis completed it in 810. It stood on a trade route from Hedeby to Magdeburg.

In 845, Vikings raided Hamburg. The town had about 500 people then. Two years later, Hamburg joined Bremen as a bishopric. In 880, Slavic and Danish soldiers destroyed Hamburg again.

By the 11th century, four castles were linked to Hamburg. The bishopric castle was built around 1037. The Wiedenburg followed in 1043. Raids by the Obodrites led the bishop to move to Bremen in 1066.

In 1189, Hamburg adopted the Lübeck law. This code of rights shaped the city. Emperor Frederick I granted Hamburg free imperial city status. This gave tax-free access to the Lower Elbe. The city also gained fishing and tree-cutting rights.
