Was poverty, unemployment, and illiteracy really tackled effectively in Zefyri? This suburb of Athens carries a history of challenges. Zefyri is a municipal unit of Fyli in West Attica. It is situated near the northeastern end of the Aigaleo mountains.

Zefyri’s built-up area connects it to neighboring suburbs. These include Ano Liosia, Acharnes, and Kamatero. The A6 motorway cuts through Zefyri. The Zefyri Tunnel helps facilitate this. Zefyri is near Ano Liosia and Acharnes. It lies approximately 10 km north of Athens city center.

The old Piraeus Patras railway passes through Zefyri. The new Athens Airport Patras railway also runs through it. Zefyri has seen population changes over the years. In 1981, it had 4906 residents. By 1991, this number increased to 8985. The population decreased slightly to 8860 in 2001. In 2011, it rose again to 9454. The latest count in 2021 shows 9901 residents.

A significant event in Zefyri’s history is the 1999 earthquake. This earthquake damaged dozens of homes. The Zefyri railway station serves the area. It is on the Athens Airport Patras railway line. The station sits inside a tunnel on the islet of Attiki Odos. It opened on May 10 2018. The Athens Suburban Railway serves it. The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport inaugurated the station. This occurred on Wednesday August 2 2017. Christos Spirtzis arrived on a special ministerial train. However, technical issues delayed its opening to passengers for nine months.

The station’s operation finally commenced in May 2018. ERGOSE constructed it using the cut and cover method. The station includes a ticket office. Seating and information boards are available on the platform. Lifts and escalators provide platform access. A local bus route stops outside the station. Since May 15 2022, weekday services call at Zefyri station. These services are part of the Athens Suburban Railway Line A4. It runs between Piraeus and Kiato. Trains operate up to once per hour. Future plans include Athens Metro Line 2 serving this station.

Zefyri faces challenges related to social inclusion. Many young people from excluded populations reside here. Issues such as poverty and unemployment need addressing. The city aims to benefit at-risk youth and the community. Intercultural dialogue and communication are key. Sharing strategies with partners helps promote these goals.

So, as you leave Zefyri today remember it is more than just a suburb. It is a place striving for progress. Its story involves railways, earthquakes and the lives of its residents.
