Peeking out from the vast expanse of Zayed Sports City rises a structure of immense significance. This is the Zayed Sports City Stadium. It is more than just a stadium. It is a symbol of the UAE’s sporting ambition.

Imagine Sheikh Zayed’s vision in 1974. He wanted a world-class sports complex. Zayed Sports City Stadium was the heart of that dream. Construction finished in 1979. The stadium opened its doors in January 1980. The cost? A cool AED 550 million.

Originally, Zayed Sports City Stadium held 60,000 fans. Today, it accommodates around 45,000. Renovations have kept it modern. It remains the largest stadium in the UAE. The stadium even features on the AED 200 banknote.

Zayed Sports City Stadium hosted the 1996 AFC Asian Cup final. It also hosted the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship. The stadium also hosted the FIFA Club World Cup in 2009 and 2010. It returned in 2017 and 2018. The 2019 AFC Asian Cup saw the opening and final matches played here.

Beyond sports, Zayed Sports City Stadium has hosted other events. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali once graced the stadium. Bon Jovi and George Michael have also performed here. Pope Francis held a mass here in 2019.

The stadium features three LED scoreboards. A modern sound system enhances the fan experience. The venue is fully lit for HDTV broadcasts. It meets international standards.
