Ever wonder what it’s like to step into a futuristic oasis in the middle of the desert? Zayed International Airport, formerly known as Abu Dhabi International Airport, is just that. This isn’t just an airport; it’s a testament to vision and innovation. Zayed International Airport, named after the UAE’s founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, officially adopted its new name in February 2024. The airport, located about 19 miles east of Abu Dhabi, sprawls across an impressive 15,000 acres. Originally conceived in 1974 as part of the nation’s modernization plan, Zayed International Airport addressed the accessibility issues of the former Abu Dhabi International Airport, now Al Bateen Airport. The old airport, situated on Abu Dhabi Island, was difficult to reach. Sheikh Zayed recognized the need for a more accessible airport as the city expanded. The new airport opened its doors in 1982, boasting a unique circular satellite terminal design, maximizing aircraft parking capacity.

Etihad Airways, established in 2003, made Zayed International Airport its hub. This marked a significant shift, especially after the UAE government relinquished its ownership of Gulf Air in 2005. Interestingly, James Hogan, the former CEO of Gulf Air, subsequently became the CEO of Etihad. The airport continued to evolve. Terminal 2 opened in 2005, and a second runway followed in 2008. Terminal 3, primarily used by Etihad, came online in 2009, boosting passenger capacity to 12 million annually. In 2014, Zayed International Airport achieved a milestone by becoming the first airport in the Middle East to offer United States border preclearance facilities. This streamlined the process for passengers traveling to the U.S. Imagine going through customs before even boarding your flight.

The crown jewel of Zayed International Airport is the magnificent Terminal A, formerly known as the Midfield Terminal. This architectural marvel, with its distinctive X-shape and luminous interior, can be seen from miles away. Terminal A elevates the airport’s capacity to over 45 million passengers a year, with potential for future expansion up to 80 million. Inside, biometric technology expedites screening and boarding. A vast retail space spans 35,000 square meters, housing 163 shops and restaurants. Even a scene from the movie “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” was filmed in Terminal A before its official opening in October 2023.

This airport also thinks ahead. Its “Smart Travel” project, launched in 2024, uses biometrics to simplify passenger identification, potentially eliminating the need for physical tickets and documents. Zayed International Airport is more than just a transit point; it’s a destination in itself. From its humble beginnings to its current state-of-the-art facilities, Zayed International Airport reflects the UAE’s commitment to progress and innovation.
