Picture if you will a place of serenity. It stands near Chefchaouen’s Grand Mosque. This is the Zaouia Al Kadiriya. It has a rich history rooted in Islamic tradition.

Zaouias are Islamic religious schools. They are like monasteries in the West African region. The word “zaouia” means “corner” in Arabic. They often include a pool and sometimes a fountain. This provides a peaceful setting for contemplation and learning.

The Zaouia Al Kadiriya was founded around 1214 H. It is strategically located on Place Wata’ Al-Hammam. This makes it central to Chefchaouen’s religious life. The zaouia has a supervisor who resides in Tetouan.

Until recently M. Saad Al-Rahmouni directed the Zaouia Al Kadiriya. Now some followers continue to read the Qadiriyya prayers. They gather after the afternoon prayer each Friday. This shows their ongoing commitment to their spiritual practices.

The Zaouia Al Kadiriya also helps the poor. Sometimes it organizes meals for those in need. This is made possible through donations from benefactors. This embodies the Islamic values of charity and community support.

Five daily prayers are celebrated here. But the morning prayer is an exception. Its banners add a unique spectacle. They appear in traditional brotherhood parades, weddings, and special occasions in Chefchaouen.

The Zaouia Al Kadiriya is linked to the Qadiriyya Sufi order. Other well-known zaouias connect to crafts and trades. These include the Tijaniyya and the Darqawiyya. Chefchaouen has eleven zaouias and seventeen mausoleums. This shows the city’s deep spiritual heritage.

The Boudechichia order has ties to the Qadiriyya. It is named after Sheikh Ali Ben Mohamed. He was nicknamed “Sidi Ali Boudechich”. During famines he fed people “dchicha” at his zaouia. This traditional dish shows his generosity.

Zaouias serve many functions. They are not only places of worship but also community centers. They provide education, meals, and spiritual guidance. They welcome visitors from all backgrounds. They support religious understanding and cultural exchange.

Note that the Zaouia Nasiriyya, once on Place Wata’ Al-Hammam, is now a mosque. It no longer functions as a zaouia. This highlights the changing roles of religious institutions over time. The Zaouia Al Kadiriya remains a vibrant center of faith. It continues to serve the community. It embodies the rich Sufi traditions of Chefchaouen. Its location near the Grand Mosque reinforces its central role. The zaouia is a testament to the city’s enduring spiritual significance.
