“Imagine, if you will, a sanctuary of peace amidst the vibrant chaos of Mumbai.” That’s Zakaria Masjid for you. More than just a place of worship, it’s a testament to Mumbai’s rich cultural tapestry and the enduring legacy of the Cutchi Memon community.

Zakaria Masjid, built in 1235 Hijri, has stood for over 204 years. Haji Zakaria Noor Mohammed Noorani, a Cutchi Memon, built this historic masjid. His vision created a lasting impact on Mumbai’s spiritual landscape.

Let’s delve deeper into the history of Zakaria Masjid. Mr. Rizwan Coatwala, the young chairman, shared insights into the mosque’s enduring legacy. Mr. Mubarak Noorani, a trustee from the Noorani family, has served for 70 years. That is possibly the longest tenure for any trustee in Maharashtra and perhaps India.

Of the five trustees, two hail from the Noorani family. The other three are elected from Mumbai’s Cutchi community. This blend ensures the masjid remains deeply rooted in its community.

Zakaria Masjid is also known for its past Imam, Ashraful ulema Peer Sayyed Hamid Ashraf. His son, Sayyed Nizam Ashraf, carries on this legacy as the current Imam. Their leadership ensures the continuity of spiritual guidance within the community.

But Zakaria Masjid isn’t just about prayer. The trust manages the Hashemiah Urdu school. It provides education to many students. The school even offers a computer center teaching MS CIT courses. Thus, Zakaria Masjid supports education and technological empowerment.

One of the forward-thinking initiatives at Zakaria Masjid is its adoption of solar panels. It was among the first masjids in Mumbai to embrace solar energy. That underlines its commitment to sustainability.

During Ramadhan, Zakaria Masjid hosts two Taraweeh prayers. These special prayers occur at 9 pm and 10:45 pm. The sacred atmosphere and devotion during this time are palpable.

As you stand before Zakaria Masjid, consider its history. Think about its role in the Cutchi Memon community. Note its commitment to education and sustainability. Zakaria Masjid is a beacon of faith and progress in Mumbai. Its story is a reminder of the enduring power of community and vision.
