Slipping through time’s veil, we find ourselves at Zafar Mahal. This isn’t just a crumbling palace. It’s a poignant echo of the Mughal empire’s final days. Zafar Mahal whispers tales of Bahadur Shah Zafar II, the last Mughal emperor, a poet-king whose reign ended in exile. He envisioned his final rest here, amidst the serenity of Mehrauli, near the revered Dargah of Khwaja Qutubuddin Bakhtiar Kaki. Fate, however, had other plans. Following the 1857 uprising, Zafar was exiled to Rangoon, his dream of a peaceful burial at Zafar Mahal shattered.

Akbar Shah II originally built Zafar Mahal in the 18th century as a summer palace. Later, Bahadur Shah Zafar II, known also by his pen name “Zafar” meaning victory, added his own touch, reconstructing the imposing entrance gate in the 19th century. This striking red sandstone structure, embellished with marble, showcases the grandeur of late Mughal architecture. The Hathi Gate, wide enough for decorated elephants to pass, stands as a testament to a bygone era. An inscription above the arch commemorates Zafar’s contribution, forever linking his name to this place. Look closely at the arch’s broad chhajja, a classic Mughal design element. Notice the projecting windows flanked by distinctive Bengali domes. The ornate lotus medallions on either side add a touch of elegance.

Beyond the gate, a three-arch opening leads to the baaraadaree, a twelve-opening structure designed to catch the breeze. Imagine the Mughal emperors seeking respite from the Delhi heat within these now-ruined walls. The top floor boasts a multi-chambered dalan, an open-sided arcade room overlooking a courtyard. From here, one could enjoy views of the bustling activity below. Within the Zafar Mahal complex lies the Moti Masjid, the pearl mosque. Built by Bahadur Shah I, this small, white marble structure served as the royal family’s private place of worship. Its austere design, with minimal embellishment save for a delicate floral carving, contrasts with the palace’s grandeur, reflecting perhaps the shifting fortunes of the Mughal dynasty.

Today, Zafar Mahal stands in a state of disrepair. Unauthorized constructions encroach upon its once-expansive grounds. Despite being declared a protected monument in 1920, neglect has taken its toll. Yet, even in ruins, Zafar Mahal holds a powerful allure. It’s a place where history and poetry intertwine, where the last Mughal emperor’s dreams linger, a bittersweet reminder of a lost era. Zafar Mahal is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a testament to the ephemeral nature of power and the enduring power of memory.
