Did you know, tucked away in the bustling heart of Saint Petersburg, lies a green oasis with a captivating past? Yusupov Garden. This seemingly tranquil space holds centuries of stories, whispering secrets of Imperial Russia. Yusupov Garden’s history begins in 1724, a gift from Peter the Great to Prince G.D. Yusupov. This loyal confidant, who knew Peter’s son, Tsarevich Peter Alexeyevich, from childhood, served the Tsar with unwavering dedication. He fought bravely in the Northern War and the pivotal Battle of Poltava. Later, his sharp mind led him to manage the Office of Investigations. Decades later, in the 1790s, the garden underwent a dramatic transformation. Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov, grandson of the original owner, commissioned the renowned architect Giacomo Quarenghi to redesign the estate. Quarenghi, already celebrated for his work on the English Palace in Peterhof and the Hermitage Theatre, left his distinctive mark on Yusupov Garden. He crafted a space of elegance and tranquility, a testament to the Yusupov family’s prominence. But the Yusupov family’s reign over the garden wouldn’t last forever. After the owners’ divorce, the estate, including the grand mansion Quarenghi designed, was sold to the state. The garden’s fate took another turn when it was transferred to the Department of Transportation. Today, the St. Petersburg State Transport University, named after Emperor Alexander I, stands on the garden’s southeast side, a modern neighbor to a historical treasure. Opened to the public in 1863, Yusupov Garden became a cherished retreat for city dwellers. Beyond its serene beauty, Yusupov Garden holds a surprising sporting legacy. In the winter of 1865, the garden transformed into a winter wonderland with the opening of a public skating rink. This rink etched its name in history in 1896 when it hosted the first World Figure Skating Championship. Yusupov Garden continued to be a hub for winter sports, hosting Russian and Soviet championships, along with lively public skating sessions. Ice slides and whimsical ice fortresses dotted the landscape, adding to the garden’s magical atmosphere. Even during the Soviet era, when it was renamed the Children’s Park of the October District, the garden continued to be a beloved destination. Its historical name, Yusupov Garden, was rightfully restored in 1990, reclaiming its link to a fascinating past. Today, the garden continues to enchant visitors. The area around the pond, a central feature of Quarenghi’s design, is a picturesque scene. Flowerbeds burst with color, playgrounds echo with children’s laughter, and quiet corners offer peaceful respite. Nearby, at 50 Sadovaya Street, stands the Central Museum of Railway Transport, another reminder of the city’s rich history. And about a kilometer away, the infamous Yusupov Palace on the Moika River whispers its own dark tales, including the story of Grigori Rasputin’s murder in 1916. Yusupov Garden is more than just a park; it’s a living testament to Saint Petersburg’s layered history. A place where whispers of imperial grandeur and echoes of sporting triumphs mingle with the laughter of children. As you stroll through its paths, remember, you walk through centuries of stories, each one woven into the fabric of this remarkable urban oasis.
