Once, this hill was a seashore. Now, let’s explore Yuhigaoka, a place cherished for thousands of years. It is known as sunset hill. Imagine standing here long ago. You would see the ocean stretching towards Osaka Bay. The steep slope under your feet marked the edge of the Uemachi Plateau.

Yuhigaoka got its name from the stunning sunsets. People watched the sun sink over the sea. The revered poet Fujiwara no Ietaka loved this view. He built a retreat called Yuhian near Shitennoji. He spent his final years here. This cemented Yuhigaoka’s legacy.

Although the sea has receded, the sunset tradition lives on. Shitennoji Temple holds a special ceremony during the spring and fall equinox. Monks chant sutras as the sun sets. Rays of light shine through the stone torii gate. It is a breathtaking sight.

The Yuhigaoka area features narrow sloping paths. These are known as the Seven Slopes of Tennoji. Each slope ends in -zaka which means hill. Shingonzaka, Genshojizaka, and Aizenzaka are among them. These slopes are steeped in history.

Kuchinawazaka is the most famous of the Seven Slopes. It appears in Ryotaro Shiba’s novel Moeyo Ken. The character Hijikata Toshizo says the sunset should be beautiful. Even if it is not, we must say it is so. He expresses deep sadness watching the sun.

There is a stone marker at Manpukuji Temple. It commemorates the Shinsengumi’s Osaka station. Hijikata Toshizo likely stayed here. Also on Kuchinawazaka is a memorial to Komatsu Tatewaki. He was a samurai who became a politician. Okubo Toshimichi and Godai Tomoatsu paid respects to him in Yuhigaoka.

Ozaka is the southernmost of the Seven Slopes. Yasui Jinja Shrine sits halfway up. This shrine has a rich history. Sanada Yukimura escaped here during the Siege of Osaka. He defended Osaka Castle from a fortress called Sanada Maru. He is remembered as Japan’s number one warrior.

Yasui Jinja Shrine is also linked to Sugawara no Michizane. He is the Shinto deity of learning. There was once a well here with water to calm children. It has since dried up.

North of Yasui Jinja Shrine is Osaka’s Kiyomizudera Temple. It is modeled after the famous Kyoto temple. It features a large platform. The temple venerates the Eleven-headed Thousand-armed Kannon Bodhisattva. From the platform, you can see Tsutenkaku.

The Kiyomizudera’s name comes from pure water. The Tamade Waterfall is Osaka’s only natural waterfall. Legend says the water flows from Shitennoji Temple. Prince Shotoku captured a blue dragon. The dragon became a pond. This water flows here. It is a spiritual power spot.

If you visit in summer, experience the festivals. Aizen Matsuri and Ikutama Matsuri are two of Osaka’s big summer events. Yuhigaoka is picturesque. People have visited for thousands of years. So bring your camera. Capture its beauty and history.
