Ernest Austin. That name is forever etched in the history of Yugar Railway Station. This unassuming rural town, located just 20 kilometers from the bustling city of Brisbane, holds a dark secret. It was here, near the Yugar Railway Station, that a heinous crime shocked the community in 1913. On a seemingly ordinary Sunday in June, 11-year-old Ivy Alexandra Mitchell was brutally murdered. The perpetrator was none other than Ernest Austin. He was apprehended and faced the full force of the law. Austin’s trial gripped the nation, becoming a media spectacle. The weight of his crimes led to his conviction. He was sentenced to death and hanged at Boggo Road Gaol in September 1913. This event marked a somber moment in Queensland’s history, as Austin became the last person to be executed in the state. Today, Yugar Railway Station stands as a silent witness to this tragic event, a stark reminder of the darkness that can lurk even in the most peaceful of places.
