Ten thousand cheering fans a roar that shakes the very foundations. That’s the Yuengling Center for you. This isn’t just any arena. It’s a place steeped in history a place where legends were made and memories forged.
Originally the USF Sun Dome it opened its doors in November 1980. It was a significant moment for the University of South Florida. Before the Yuengling Center USF’s basketball teams played in various locations. This included Curtis Hixon Hall and even the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg. The arena was more than just a sports venue though. It hosted concerts by Alice Cooper and many other big names.
The Yuengling Center wasn’t always as grand as it is today. Construction started in 1977. Problems arose with cracks in the support beams. These delays didn’t stop the opening though. Both the Sun Dome and the University of Florida’s O’Connell Center were built around the same time. They even shared a similar design. The original inflatable roof was later replaced in 2000. This was a major upgrade. A $35.6 million renovation in 2011 further transformed the Yuengling Center. It became ADA compliant and LEED Silver certified.
Then came the naming rights deal. In 2018 the Yuengling Center got its current name. A 10-year partnership with the Yuengling brewery. This cemented the arena’s place in Tampa’s cultural landscape. The Yuengling Center hosted WWE’s ThunderDome in 2021. The arena was transformed into a virtual arena. It was broadcast to millions around the world.
Today the Yuengling Center continues to thrive. It hosts hundreds of events annually. From sporting events to concerts to family shows this arena has something for everyone. The student section is a sea of spirited fans. The energy here is palpable. It’s a testament to the facility’s versatility and enduring popularity. A place where history and entertainment collide. A place where the roar of the crowd echoes through time. This is the Yuengling Center. A place where memories are made.
