Initially, the Young Israel of Montreal, a small Orthodox congregation, held services in the United Talmud Torah Bialik school building on Jeanne Mance. The Young Israel of Montreal Synagogue has witnessed a fascinating journey over the years. The congregation became part of the international Young Israel Movement. They experienced a split in the early 1940s, only to reunite a few years later, stronger than before. Officially incorporated in 1945, the Young Israel of Montreal Synagogue found its permanent home on Hillsdale in 1949. This building started as a community center, with the magnificent sanctuary we stand before completed in 1954. This sanctuary, with its stunning acoustics and beautiful stained glass windows, evokes the grandeur of historic synagogues, many of which are sadly lost to time. The Young Israel of Montreal Synagogue played a role in shaping Jewish education in the city. Their school merged with the Adath Israel school in the 1960s, forming the Hebrew Academy. The synagogue has adapted to the changing demographics of the community. It now hosts Moroccan and Egyptian services and houses a Belzer Hasidim school. This evolution led to the establishment of other Young Israel congregations in Chomedey and St. Laurent.
