“Diligence” the school motto echoes across the courtyard. This is Yongsan Railroad High School a place steeped in history. Look at this impressive building. It stands as a testament to perseverance. Established in 1946 Yongsan High School didn’t have an easy start. Its origins trace back to the Japanese colonial era. But it officially began in 1946 educating boys. This is only officially recognised because before that it exclusively educated the children of Japanese military officials. Like many Seoul schools it evacuated to Busan during the Korean War. In 1953 it returned sharing buildings with US military forces. The current main building opened in 1999. A new dormitory was added in 2011 for boarding students. Yongsan High School is a general high school with a strong focus on science and mathematics. It’s not a specialised science high school but it still attracts gifted students from across Seoul. The school is renowned for its sports teams. Its field hockey team is a powerhouse winning back-to-back national championships in 2019 and 2020. The basketball team is legendary. It’s one of the earliest high schools to introduce the sport producing numerous professional players. From the 1960s to the 1980s it was one of Seoul’s top basketball schools. Even today its alumni are prominent in Korean basketball. The term “Yongsan mafia” has been used by the media to describe the influence of its alumni. This is because a surprising number of administrators players and coaches in the Korean Basketball League are Yongsan graduates. The school has produced three number 1 draft picks in the KBL. Its notable alumni include businessmen athletes actors and even a judge of Korea’s Constitutional Court. The school’s legacy extends beyond sports. Its dedication to academics and its history make it a truly remarkable institution. Yongsan High School’s story is one of resilience triumph and lasting impact.
