Established in 2006 Yongsan International School of Seoul YISS stands proudly in Itaewon. It wasn’t always here. Its story begins with a need. Expatriate families in Seoul needed more space in foreign schools. The Korea Foreign School Foundation KFSF dreamed big. They wanted Asia’s best foreign school. They almost partnered with Seoul Foreign School SFS to create the British International School of Seoul BISS. This almost happened. SFS even invested $1.5 million. But negotiations stalled. Disagreements over control and the International Baccalaureate IB program led to a bitter split.
Protests erupted. The European Chamber of Commerce withdrew. Ambassadors wrote letters. KFSF then held a new bidding process. International Christian School ICS Seoul won. This caused further outrage. Many felt a faith-based organization was unsuitable for a government-funded school. But the decision stood. ICS Seoul moved into the new Hannam-dong building. It officially opened on August 16 2006. It was renamed Yongsan International School of Seoul YISS.
Today YISS thrives. It occupies 23100 square meters of land leased from the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The school boasts modern facilities. These include state-of-the-art classrooms science labs and athletic fields. Students from 43 countries attend YISS. They represent a vibrant global community. YISS offers a college preparatory program with strong Advanced Placement AP courses. Its graduates attend prestigious universities worldwide including Harvard Yale and Stanford.
But the controversies haven’t vanished completely. In 2008 YISS admitted enrolling unqualified Korean students. This caused further criticism. In 2023 parents petitioned against the headmaster. In 2024 employees filed discrimination complaints. Yet despite these challenges YISS remains a significant international school. It continues to shape the lives of countless students. It provides a vital educational hub in Seoul. It offers a glimpse into the complex interplay of education politics and culture in South Korea.
