Glancing around, Yongqing Fang whispers tales of Guangzhou’s past. It stands as a testament to the city’s vibrant culture. Yongqing Fang is more than just old buildings. It is a blend of tradition and modernity.

Let’s step back in time to 1931. Yongqing Fang has witnessed significant historical and cultural shifts in Guangzhou. The area became a gathering place for artists. Litterateurs, martial arts actors, and Cantonese opera performers once filled these streets. They practiced and performed. This street is steeped in local culture and history.

One notable landmark is the home of Hoi-Chuen Lee. He was Bruce Lee’s father. Hoi-Chuen Lee was also a famous Cantonese opera star. His home still stands. It retains its original wood and brick structure. Intricate carved girders and colorful glass screens adorn the building. It is now a popular tourist spot.

Another significant site is the Grand Theater. It marked a golden age of cinema. This overhanging structure has six stories. Its grey facade stands out. The theater opened in 1934. It quickly became a favorite among locals. Famous Cantonese opera stars graced its stage. Sit Kok Sin and Ma Si Tsang performed here. The theater enjoyed its peak from 1978 to 1979.

However, time took its toll. As Guangzhou developed eastward, Yongqing Fang faced neglect. Buildings fell into disrepair. Roads deteriorated and underground networks aged. The once-flourishing culture faded. Young people left for better opportunities.

In 2016, Guangzhou launched a “mini-transformation” program. The goal was to renew old buildings. They wanted to maintain the original structure. Modern elements were added to improve the space. The buildings were adapted for modern needs.

The first phase finished in October 2016. Roads were repaved with granite. Overhead cables went underground. Meadows and public spaces appeared. Community health centers were upgraded. Drainage, lighting, and fire systems improved.

Consider Li Yuqiong’s family. They lived on Yongqing Street for six decades. Before the renovation, the street suffered from poor conditions. Traffic congestion was common. Rainwater flooded their doorstep. They worried about the cables during storms.

After the “mini-transformation,” tourists flooded in. Li started a snack stall. She sold local favorites like beef offal with turnips. Pig trotters stewed with ginger were also on the menu. She sometimes earned several hundred yuan a day. A dilapidated building across from her home became a trendy café.

Renovators meticulously matched new bricks to the original color. They even restored carp-shaped outfalls on the roofs. These details reflect South China’s architectural style. The program aimed to preserve memories of old buildings.

Today, Yongqing Fang thrives. It attracts young entrepreneurs. The area boasts cultural shops, boutique hotels, restaurants, and media companies. It has become a hub for young “makers.”

Yongqing Fang is a must-see in Guangzhou. Cafes, creative shops, and home-stay hotels draw many visitors. On average, the street welcomes 3,000 visitors on weekdays. Weekends see up to 5,000 people at peak times.

As you explore Yongqing Fang, notice how history and innovation coexist. It is a place where the past is not forgotten. It is a place where the future is embraced. It is a unique blend of old and new. Yongqing Fang stands as a proud symbol of Guangzhou’s enduring spirit.
