Long ago, locals believed a powerful dragon ascended to the heavens from this very spot. That’s how Yongmasan Mountain got its name.
Yongmasan is the highest mountain in the Jungnang-gu district of Seoul. It offers stunning views and an accessible hiking course. Yongmasan is connected to Achasan Mountain. Together, they create a popular hiking destination near Seoul.
Before you start your hike on Yongmasan, take a moment to appreciate Yongma Waterfall Park. It features man-made waterfalls. They offer a refreshing sight. Also, visit Yongmasanjeong Pavilion. Relax here and soak in the scenery.
The path to Yongmabong Peak has many stairs. From the Yongmasan Observatory, you can see all of Seoul. When you reach the summit, Yongmabong Peak, you can also walk to Achasan Mountain.
Yongmasan is 348 meters high. It is an easier climb that just about anyone can conquer. The mountain is easily accessible via Seoul’s subway system. Take subway line 7 to Yongmasan station. Use exit 2.
The complete section of the Seoul Trail through Yongmasan and Achasan is 12.6km long. It takes about 5 hours.
Many people begin at Gwangnaru Station. They hike through Achasan before reaching Yongmasan. The reverse course from Yongmasan Station is more difficult. It ascends all the way to Yongmasan Mountain Peak.
The mountain has several scenic observatories. They are great snack stops. Look out for orange ribbons. They are tied to trees to guide you along Seoul Trail.
From Achasan Mountain Summit, you can continue to Yongmasan. You will pass Achasan Fort No. 4. The trail to Yongmasan Mountain goes up and down stairs in the forest.
At the summit of Yongmasan Mountain, you’ll find a stone monument. It shows the mountain’s name and height. It gives hikers a sense of accomplishment.
Yongmasan offers breathtaking panoramic views. Many recommend evening hikes. You can see the glittering lights of Seoul. Look for Lotte Tower, Namsan Tower, and the Han River.
Yongma Waterfall Park has outdoor sports facilities. There is a rock climbing wall. You can find tennis courts and soccer fields. A spacious Children’s Playground makes it great for families.
To hike Yongmasan from the park, walk toward the waterfall. Pass the rock climbing wall. Head up the wooden steps on the right. Follow the sign that says “Yongmabong peak”. Continue past the basketball court to the hiking trail.
From there, it is a 1.3km hike up stone paths and stairs to the peak. The route to Yongmasan Station takes about 1 hour to complete. Pink and red ribbons mark the correct route.
If you are adventurous, you can hike from Yongmasan to Achasan Mountain. This longer hike takes 2-3 hours. Bring water and a snack.
