Crimson walls rise before us. These walls encircle the Yonghe Temple. It stands as a testament to Beijing’s rich history. The Yonghe Temple is also known as the Lama Temple. It is a unique blend of Tibetan Buddhism and Chinese imperial culture.

The Yonghe Temple started as a residence in 1694. It housed Qing Dynasty court eunuchs. Prince Yong held court here later. He died in 1735. The temple transformed again in 1744. It became a full monastery. Today, it is one of the best examples of a lamasery in the world.

Notice the symmetry. Every element is carefully balanced. The main halls align on a north-south axis. Wing halls flank both sides. This design reflects ancient architectural principles. It creates a sense of harmony and peace.

Let’s step through the entrance. We’ll first pass a large wall screen. Then, we’ll walk through three tall Pailous. These are traditional Chinese buildings. They mark the entrance. The Zhaotai Gate awaits beyond the imperial passageway. A drum tower stands solemnly to the west. A bell tower mirrors it on the east.

The Hall of the Heavenly Kings is more than just an entrance. Sanskrit bells hang from the corners. Mantras adorn the door lintels. Four Heavenly Kings are enshrined here. They stand guard. A statue of Maitreya sits smiling at the center.

Beyond lies the Hall of Harmony and Peace. It centers the courtyard. This hall houses statues of three Buddhas. Sakyamuni represents the present. Kasyapa Matanga embodies the past. Maitreya symbolizes the future. A copper cooking vessel stands in the courtyard. It dates back to 1747. It’s known as one of the ‘three rarest objects in Beijing’.

Next, we approach the Hall of Everlasting Blessings. This was once Prince Yong’s residence. Now, it houses the Amitabha Buddha. The Medicine Buddha also resides here. Lion Buddha completes the trio. Look closely at the Green Tara depiction. It is made of over 4000 pieces of silk.

The Hall of the Dharma Wheel is where lamas once held ceremonies. They read sutras here. A statue of Tsong Khapa dominates the hall. He founded the Yellow Hat Sect. Behind him is a woodcarving of a hill. It features 449 Arhat statues.

Finally, we arrive at the Pavilion of Infinite Happiness. This is the temple’s highest hall. Inside stands a massive Maitreya statue. The seventh Dalai Lama presented it to Emperor Qianlong. Carved from a single sandalwood tree, it is 26 meters tall. Eight meters are buried underground. A niche for Buddha features ninety-nine dragons.

The Yonghe Temple integrates Han, Manchu, Mongolian, and Tibetan styles. Yellow glazed tiles adorn the roofs. Red walls circle the buildings. This architectural complex is a mini-palace. It blends imperial style with Buddhist spirituality.

Remember the Yonghe Temple’s story. It began as a prince’s home. It transformed into a vibrant center for Tibetan Buddhism. It survived wars and revolutions. Today, it stands as a symbol of peace and harmony. It is a testament to Beijing’s enduring cultural legacy.
