“Lost in Guangzhou?” a kind voice startled me. I blinked, realizing I’d been staring at a map for far too long. “Looking for Yonghe,” I mumbled, pointing towards a tangle of streets. The woman smiled. “Ah, Yonghe Subdistrict. Just follow me.” As we walked, she began to share stories. Yonghe, she explained, is nestled within the larger Luogang District of Guangzhou, in Guangdong province. Unlike some of the more ancient parts of the city, Yonghe is a relatively modern addition to the urban tapestry, a subdistrict bustling with life. My guide pointed out local shops and markets. She explained how Yonghe plays a vital role in the sprawling metropolis of Guangzhou. She described its connection to the greater city, its place within the network of districts that make up this vibrant hub. I realized that Yonghe, though not as famous as some of Guangzhou’s historic landmarks, possessed a unique charm.
