How about a journey to Yong’an, a township nestled in the Yongfu region of Guilin, Guangxi, China? Yong’an may seem like a simple town but it holds a story within its borders.

Yong’an is a township in Yongfu. It is part of the larger Guilin area known for its stunning landscapes. While not much is specifically documented about Yong’an itself, its location within Guilin speaks volumes. Guilin has a rich history. It is famous for its karst topography which is a landscape made of limestone rocks. The name Guilin even translates to “forest of sweet osmanthus” because of the many fragrant trees.

Guilin’s history stretches back to the Qin Dynasty. Around 214 BC, the Guilin Shire was established marking the first use of the name Guilin. This area became a gateway between Central China and the Lingnan Region because of the Lingqu Canal. The Lingqu Canal is an engineering marvel that links the Yangtze and Pearl River systems.

Over the centuries, Guilin has been known by different names. It was once called Guizhou. It gained importance during the Tang Dynasty when city walls and halls were constructed. Today, you can still see remnants of this past at the Ancient South Gate.

During the Song Dynasty, Guilin served as the capital of Guangnan xilu. This region included present-day Guangxi and Hainan. This era left behind rock inscriptions that can be found at the Museum of Guihai Stele Forest.

In the Ming Dynasty, Guilin was administered by a nephew of the Emperor who took the title “Prince of Jingjiang”. He built the Jingjiang Palace. Later, princes of the Jingjiang family were buried at the Mausoleum of Prince Jingjiang.

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Guilin became the capital of Guangxi. More people settled along the Li River. This is why you can find ancient towns with traditional Chinese architecture near Guilin.

Guilin also played a role during World War II. The Yangtang Airfield was important for Sino-US cooperation against Japan. Today, you can still see remnants of this airfield.

Even famous figures have visited Guilin. Former US Presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton admired its beauty.

Yong’an’s story is intertwined with Guilin’s larger narrative. It is a place surrounded by natural beauty and steeped in history. While Yong’an itself may be a quiet township, it represents a part of Guilin’s rich cultural heritage.
