Founded in 1913 Yoker Evangelical Church boasts a rich history. It all began with James Crawford a man deeply concerned about the spiritual wellbeing of Yoker’s shipyard and factory workers. He found a lack of active gospel work in the community. This sparked a movement.

Initially services were held in Crawford’s home. Open-air meetings took place at the corner of Dumbarton Road and Ferry Road. The need for a proper space grew quickly. In 1914 Yoker Mission Hall opened in a building previously used as billiard rooms and even a pub. This location known as the Auld Hoose was soon too small.

The church expanded and moved to a new hall in 1930. This wooden structure was surprisingly resilient surviving both an incendiary bomb during the Clydebank Blitz and a landmine. It stood as a testament to the community’s faith. The resilience of the building mirrored the community’s unwavering spirit.

Through the years Yoker Mission Hall continued to serve the community. It survived two World Wars. It thrived despite facing many challenges. In 1984 the mission was renamed Yoker Evangelical Church. This marked seventy years of serving the community. A significant expansion took place in 1985 thanks to generous donations from the congregation.

The church’s commitment to its community extended beyond its walls. In 1992 it opened Mill Haven a faith-based elderly care home. Sadly it closed in 2009 due to government policy changes. The church continued to adapt. In 1998 it appointed its first full-time pastor Alan Wells. His leadership saw the creation of new ministries. These included a baby and toddler group and an online Bible study for teenagers.

Further expansion of the building took place in 2011. This included a new vestry kitchen classrooms and a larger hall. Different pastors served the church over the years. Each one contributed to the congregation’s growth and spiritual development. Robbie Brown’s leadership brought about Café Emmaus. It welcomes the vulnerable to weekly lunches.

Today Yoker Evangelical Church continues its mission. It’s a vibrant community of Christians committed to their faith. They serve Yoker and beyond. The church’s enduring legacy is a testament to its commitment to community and unwavering faith. The church stands proudly at 2420 Dumbarton Road. It’s a living example of a church that has adapted grown and endured for over a century.
