Yo, América Statue

Sculpted in fiery red, the Yo, América statue commands attention. It has stood proudly in the heart of Monterrey’s Mitras Centro district since 1993. This striking artwork, a creation of the talented Neoleonese sculptor Alberto Cavazos, isn’t just a statue. It’s a conversation across continents, a symbol of connection, and a testament to the power of art to transcend boundaries. Yo, América is composed of a dominant central figure, crafted in 1977, standing an impressive five meters tall and weighing almost seven tons. Around this central figure are eight smaller, yellow figures, creating a visual dialogue between the singular and the plural, the individual and the community. Each figure in the ensemble depicts a female form, an exploration of femininity and its many facets. The main figure of Yo, América holds a particular fascination. When viewed head-on, the profile of a woman’s head is clearly visible, the large void of her hair framing her face. Her arms extend outward, and two cylinders, representing breasts, add another layer of meaning. As you move around the statue, however, the figurative aspect begins to dissolve into a more abstract form. It invites viewers to consider the multifaceted nature of identity and the interplay between representation and interpretation. Interestingly, the Yo, América statue has a twin. This identical sculpture resides in the Plaza de Monterrey in Barcelona, a gift from the Monterrey City Council in 1995 to commemorate the twinning of the two cities. The Monterrey figure faces east, while its Barcelona counterpart faces west, creating a symbolic gaze across the Atlantic Ocean. This transatlantic connection underscores the themes of communication and unity embodied by Yo, América.
