Is it possible that Ankara holds one of Turkey’s oldest mosques still standing? We are standing before the Aslanhane Mosque. It is also known as the Arslanhane Camisi or the Mosque of the Lions. The Aslanhane Mosque is a historical treasure dating back to the 13th century. It enriches Ankara’s cultural heritage.

Built in 1290 during the reign of Mesud II, this mosque showcases Seljuk architecture. Ebubekir Mehmet designed the mosque. Ahi leaders Hüsamettin and Hasaneddin commissioned it. Later, in 1330, Ahi leader Şerafettin repaired the mosque and it was named after him. The Directorate General of Foundations restored it between 2010 and 2013.

Located in Ankara’s old quarter near Ankara Castle, it stands 947 meters high. It overlooks the city. The Aslanhane Mosque’s architecture blends face stone and rubble stone. Its wooden roof is supported by 24 large wood columns. The mosque spans 400 square meters. It features one minaret. Three gates and twelve windows offer entry and light. Seljuk tiles adorn the mihrab adding to its historic charm.

Interestingly much of the building material came from older structures. These are known as spolia. This adds a unique layer to its story. Şerafettin’s tomb faces the mosque. Legend says a lion statue was buried in the walls giving rise to the name Aslanhane. Aslanhane means house of the lion.

The Aslanhane Mosque stands as a testament to Ankara’s rich history. It reflects Seljuk craftsmanship and Ahi patronage. Its enduring presence connects us to the city’s past. It invites reflection on the layers of history within its walls. Take a moment to appreciate the Aslanhane Mosque. Envision the echoes of prayers. Imagine the artisans who shaped this timeless Ankara landmark.
