“Ninety-four years.” Imagine those words etched onto the very stones of Yeshurun Central Synagogue. This synagogue stands as a testament to faith and community. It is open to all Jews. Welcome to Yeshurun.

Yeshurun Synagogue is located at the corner of Shmuel Hanagid Street and King George Street. It embodies a unique blend of history and modern Orthodox tradition. The community was established in the early 1920s. Lou Louver, an American newcomer, founded it. He aimed to create a synagogue that would attract young people.

The Yeshurun Synagogue’s architecture is notable. Built in the international style, it features a rounded front. Narrow windows preserve the privacy of worshipers. They also allow natural light to filter in.

Funds for the Yeshurun Synagogue began in the 1920s. Contributions came from the community. The Synagogue Association of America also helped. A memorial plaque inside Yeshurun reads: “The United Synagogues of America excavated this holy land…and also contributed with a generous hand to this building.”

Chief Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak HaCohen Kook blessed the community. He even donated a Torah scroll to Yeshurun. The Elisher family donated another.

Yeshurun became a landmark for major events in Jerusalem. Its location in the Rehavia neighborhood was strategic. This area was home to Zionist leaders and Jerusalem’s cultural elite. This attracted a diverse audience to Yeshurun.

Presidents Yitzhak Ben Zvi, Zalman Shazar, and Herzog worshiped here. David Ben Gurion prayed at Yeshurun on the day the first Knesset convened nearby. Professor Yeshayahu Leibovitch and Chief Justice Menachem Alon were also members. Prominent women like Henrietta Sold and Sara Herzog attended too. Traditional and secular residents worshiped together in Yeshurun.

Daily services take place in the main sanctuary and Beit Midrash. Regular members and visitors from Israel and abroad attend. On Shabbatot and Chagim, special services are held for young marrieds and singles. Cantor Asher Hainovitz leads these services. His interpretations of the prayers are beautiful and meaningful.

Yeshurun offers learning programs too. A Hebrew program for retirees attracts many students daily. There is also a daily Daf Yomi lecture in English. A Monday morning lecture program in English draws a large crowd.

The Yeshurun Central Synagogue continues to thrive. It stands as a symbol of Jerusalem. It represents revival, Zionism, and tolerant Judaism. It is a social mosaic. It is where diverse people unite under one roof.

So, as you stand before Yeshurun Synagogue, remember its rich history. Picture the leaders, scholars, and everyday people. They all came together in this sacred space. The Yeshurun Synagogue is more than a building. It is a living testament to Jerusalem’s enduring spirit.
