Overlooking the vibrant cityscape, Yeougul beckons with an air of mystery. Yeougul, often overshadowed by Seoul’s towering skyscrapers, holds a captivating story waiting to be unveiled. The name itself, Yeougul, adds to the intrigue, with some believing it translates to “Your Island,” a playful jab at its former insignificance as a flood-prone sandbar. Yet, the official Seoul tourism website offers a different interpretation, describing it as “Broad Island.” Now, Yeougul stands as a testament to transformation. Originally a desolate patch of land on the Han River, it became home to Korea’s first airport in 1924. Imagine the roar of early aircraft taking off and landing against the backdrop of a developing city. This era, however, was short-lived. The airport’s vulnerability to flooding led to its eventual replacement by Gimpo International Airport for commercial flights in 1958 and Seoul Air Base for military operations in 1971. The late 1960s marked a turning point for Yeougul with the construction of major housing developments, many of which still stand today. The island’s connection to the mainland strengthened in 1970 with the construction of a six-lane bridge, part of President Park Chung Hee’s Han River development project. Yeougul continued its evolution, solidifying its position on the map in 1971 with the formation of Yeouido-dong as a separate entity. In 1975, the National Assembly Building opened its doors on Yeougul’s western side, cementing the area as the political heart of South Korea. A few years later, in 1985, the iconic 63 Building pierced the skyline, becoming a symbol of the nation’s progress and ambition. Today, Yeougul stands as a dynamic blend of history, politics, and modernity, a testament to South Korea’s remarkable journey.
