“What’s in a name?” they ask. Here in Yeonhui-dong, the name itself is a tribute. It honors the Yeonhuigung palace. Early Joseon kings praised this palace. King Sejong often stayed here on weekends. He even had the first Korean silk made here.

Yeonhui-dong sits in the heart of Seodaemun District. This neighborhood is near Yonsei University. The name Yonsei blends Yeonhui and Severance. These were the former Yonhee College and Severance Union Medical College.

During the Korean War, Yeonhui-dong held a strategic position on Hill 104. Hongjecheon stream borders it to the west. Ansan mountain lies to the east. Yeonnam-dong is to the south.

The Seodaemun District office sits atop this area. You will also find the Seodaemun Health Center and Youth Center here.

Yeonhui-dong once had different names during the Joseon period. It was called Jeongja-dong, Yeom-dong, Gung-dong, and Eumwol-ri. During the Japanese occupation, it became Yeonhui-jeong. In 1946, it officially became Yeonhui-dong.

Part of Yeonhui-dong joined Mapo District in 1975. It became Yeonnam-dong. This area sits on the other side of the Gyeongui Line’s southern section.

Yeonhui-dong is known for its international schools. Seoul Foreign School and Seoul Chinese School are both here. Many hagwon are also in this neighborhood. Though Yonsei University lends its name to the area, it’s actually in Sinchon-dong.

Many expat families live in Yeonhui-dong. It is a low-rise and residential area. The Chinese community is less visible now. However some restaurants and shops remain, especially along Yeonhuimat-gil.

Two former South Korean presidents lived here. They were Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo. Many singers, actors, artists, and writers also call Yeonhui-dong home. Jeon Somi, Seo Taiji, and Kim Young-ha are among them.

There are many attractions and landmarks to visit in Yeonhui-dong. One is the Seodaemun Museum of Natural History. Another is the Seodaemun-gu office complex. Ansan Park and Ansan forest offer green spaces. Seoul Art Space Yeonhui hosts writers. The site of Yeonhuigung palace has a restored well. You can also visit the Yeonhui Hill 104 Battleground site.

Yeonhui-dong is not exactly on the tourist map, but it offers a quiet and charming residential environment with unique cafes and restaurants.

SPACE Magazine noted the transformation of Yeonhui-dong. Old houses are renovated into commercial spaces. The landscape changes spontaneously as the public changes.

Notably, Yeonhui-dong’s residents have shaped its character. Many prefer local brands to franchises. This has fostered the creation of unique businesses. Unlike other Seoul neighborhoods, Yeonhui-dong has maintained a balance. This balance is between residential and commercial areas.

COOM Partners has transformed many houses in Yeonhui-dong. They extend alleyways into buildings. They remove barriers. Terraces and staircases open up views. The goal is to capture the feel of an old village within a single building.

So, when you think of Yeonhui-dong, remember its layers of history. It is a blend of royal tribute, wartime strategy, and modern residential charm.
