Deep within the bustling heart of Seoul, tucked away in the tranquil district of Dongdaemun-gu, lies a hidden sanctuary. It is Yeonghwiwon, a poignant reminder of the twilight years of the Joseon Dynasty. Yeonghwiwon is not a grand palace or a bustling marketplace. It is a place of quiet reflection, a pair of royal burial mounds. The larger of the two mounds, Yeonghwiwon, holds the remains of a royal concubine who passed away in 1911. This woman, though not a queen, played a role in the final chapter of a dynasty that spanned over five centuries. Her tomb, a simple yet elegant tumulus, speaks volumes about the changing times. The Joseon era, with its strict Confucian hierarchies, was drawing to a close. Yet the respect for tradition, for the rituals of burial and remembrance, remained strong. Yeonghwiwon offers a glimpse into this period of transition. It stands in stark contrast to the elaborate tombs of earlier rulers. It reflects a more subdued era. Beside Yeonghwiwon is Sunginwon, a smaller mound. This is the resting place of the infant son of the last Joseon crown prince. The child, who lived only from 1921 to 1922, represents a dynasty’s lost future. Together, Yeonghwiwon and Sunginwon tell a story of endings and beginnings. They offer a quiet space for contemplation amidst the vibrant energy of modern Seoul. These tombs serve as a poignant reminder of the passage of time. They invite us to reflect on the lives lived and the legacies left behind, within the ever-evolving story of Korea.
