“Clagh Ouyr,” they call it in Manx. The locals know it better as Yellow Stone. This isn’t just any peak. It’s a silent storyteller etched into the Isle of Man landscape.
Yellow Stone stands as a testament to the island’s turbulent geological past. The Isle of Man’s geology consists primarily of sedimentary rocks dating from the Ordovician period. These ancient layers were folded and faulted. This happened during the Caledonian and Acadian orogenies. The bedrock is overlain by glacial deposits.
Imagine a time, hundreds of millions of years ago. The Isle of Man was thousands of kilometres south of the equator. It lay in a deep ocean. Over millions of years, the landmass drifted northwards. It experienced huge variations in sea level and climate.
Yellow Stone, like much of the Isle of Man, owes its existence to these Ordovician rocks. These rocks, traditionally known as the Manx Slates, are now called the Manx Group. The Manx Group is poorly fossiliferous. However, acritarchs and graptolite provide insight into the succession’s biostratigraphy.
Snaefell, the highest point on the Isle of Man, shares a similar origin. It is formed from the mudstones of the Barrule Formation. These same rocks also form the summit of South Barrule.
Dykes of Ordovician to Silurian age have been intruded into the rocks of the Manx and Dalby groups. They are well exposed along the rocky shores south of Ramsey and Kirk Michael.
Consider the reddish-brown sandstones along the coast north-east of Peel. These rocks, part of the Peel Group of early Devonian age, tell another chapter. They extend inland and were formed from fluvial and aeolian processes.
The Isle of Man’s geological history is complex. The lower Palaeozoic rocks are intensely folded. Deformation includes shear zones. They are cut by faults with a north-east to southwest orientation.
Lead, copper, zinc, and silver mineralisation occurred in certain areas. This includes Foxdale and Glen Mooar. Vein deposits are associated with faults in Manx Group rocks. Galena and sphalerite are the main ore minerals.
During the last Ice Age, the island was surrounded by Irish Sea Ice. The Devensian left glacial till, widespread across the landscape. Pleistocene sediments across the north are estimated to be over 250m thick.
Today, the Manx Geological Survey promotes education and research on Manx geology. They maintain a website dedicated to the island’s geological heritage.
Yellow Stone stands as a reminder of the Isle of Man’s dynamic past. This landscape has been assembled from different pieces of continents. It has been broken apart by earthquakes and volcanoes. Smothered by ice, this island holds stories etched in stone. So when you see Yellow Stone, remember you’re looking at millions of years in the making.
