Could a mosque whisper secrets of empires past? Here at the Yavuz Sultan Selim Camii, it certainly feels that way. This mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a monument to history, a tribute to a powerful sultan, and a landmark on Ankara’s skyline. Yavuz Sultan Selim Camii, commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, honors his father, Selim I. Completed between 1527 and 1528, the mosque holds the distinction of being one of the oldest imperial mosques in Istanbul. It sits atop the fifth hill, in the Çukurbostan neighborhood, looking out over the Golden Horn. Its placement and impressive size make it an easily recognizable part of the Istanbul skyline. The mosque’s architect was Alaüddin, also known as Acem Alisi. Although some have tried to connect the famous Mimar Sinan to the mosque’s design, there’s no real proof. Mimar Sinan did, however, design a tomb within the mosque’s gardens. Yavuz Sultan Selim Camii’s exterior is as grand as its history. A large courtyard, or avlu, welcomes visitors, surrounded by a colonnaded portico. The columns themselves are a mix of marble and granite. Colorful tile panels, decorated with the cuerda seca technique, adorn the exterior. These tiles are quite similar to those found in Topkapı Palace’s Circumcision Room, likely created by the same Iranian artisans. Two towering minarets frame the mosque. Inside, the design shifts to a striking simplicity. The prayer hall is a square, each side measuring 24.5 meters. Above, a shallow dome rises to a height of 32.5 meters. The windows, framed by polychrome cuerda seca tiles, allow light to stream into the hall. Domed passages lead to smaller, domed rooms originally used as hospices for traveling dervishes. Behind the Yavuz Sultan Selim Camii, the garden holds several tombs. One belongs to Selim I himself, completed in 1523. The octagonal structure is adorned with unique tile panels. Another octagonal tomb, designed by Sinan, houses several of Suleiman’s children. A third tomb belongs to Sultan Abdülmecid I, built just before his death in 1861. Yavuz Sultan Selim Camii is more than just stones and tiles. It is a place where history and art meet, whispering stories of Ottoman power and artistry.
