The Yasui Konpira-gu is a truly unique place, and its history is intertwined with the fate of a long-ago emperor. It’s located in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto and is revered as a shrine with a powerful history. This shrine has a long history, beginning in the 7th century as a temple named Fujidera. This temple was favored by Emperor Sutoku who loved wisteria and visited the shrine often. He even came to be enshrined here. But Sutoku’s story is one of intrigue and political turmoil. He was forced into exile after losing a war over succession. His spirit, however, continued to be worshipped at the shrine, which evolved through the years to become the Yasui Konpira-gu.

As you stand before the shrine, you might notice a large stone that is something special. It is called the “Enkiri-Enmusubi” monument. Locals believe that this stone with its distinctive hole, can help sever bad connections and, conversely, forge new, positive ones. The process is believed to be powerful. First, you pay respects at the main hall. Then, you write your wish on a talisman called a katashiro and attach it to the stone. That’s not all! You crawl through the hole, first from the front to the back to break unwanted ties, and then back from the back to the front to get a fresh start. This shrine is a true testament to the power of faith; thousands of katashiro are attached to the monument, serving as a visual reminder of the countless hopes and wishes for a happier future.
