From a Lenape word meaning “place of the wood boundary,” Yantacaw Park in Nutley, New Jersey, holds a history as rich as the trees that grace its landscape. Yantacaw Park wasn’t always the tranquil oasis you see today. Originally a wetland, the area underwent a transformation starting in 1911 when Essex County began acquiring land for the park. The wetlands were drained, a dam created a lake, and by 1914, Yantacaw Park was born. This was no small feat, thanks to the tireless campaigning of John R. Clark and Dr. Thomas E. Satterthwaite, who as early as 1895 envisioned a park on this land. Their dream finally materialized after years of pushing for county funding. The park holds even deeper roots in history. The Lenni-Lenape Indians once gathered here annually during their journey to the seashore. The spot held significance, located where the Third River, or Yountakah as it appeared on a 1666 deed, meets the Passaic River. Yantacaw Park even boasts a unique piece of the 36-mile Lenape Trail. This urban/suburban trail weaves through 18 parks and 11 municipalities in Essex County, connecting the past to the present. Today, Yantacaw Park offers 28.75 acres of natural beauty. A park drive separates the scenic river valley from the upper flatlands, home to several ballfields. While the lake created in the park’s early days is now gone, replaced by a channel dug in 1962, the spirit of the Lenni-Lenape and the vision of its early advocates live on. Yantacaw Park remains a testament to their legacy, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of Nutley.
