Yanjiao’s name hints at its ancient roots. Once a suburb of the State of Yan during the Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period its history stretches back centuries. Before the establishment of the People’s Republic it was part of Tong County later becoming part of Sanhe County. It wasn’t until March 1983 after years under commune administration that Yanjiao officially became a town.
The town’s growth is intimately linked with Beijing. The high cost of living in Beijing pushed many residents to Yanjiao. They commute daily to Beijing for work. The number is impressive. Some estimate it at 300000 daily commuters. This massive influx transformed Yanjiao. It became a city of beds a place where people sleep but work elsewhere.

Tragedy struck Yanjiao in March 2024. A huge explosion resulted in seven deaths and twenty-seven injuries. This somber event is a stark reminder of the challenges associated with rapid growth.
