Within Yangpyeong-dong’s borders history whispers. This Seoul neighborhood wasn’t always a bustling dong. It has a long and fascinating past stretching back to the Joseon era. Imagine Yangpyeong-dong as Yangpyeong-ri a small village in Gyeonggi-do. It underwent many administrative changes. In 1914 it was part of Buk-myeon Siheung-gun. By 1920 it fell under Yeongdeungpo-myeon Siheung-gun. In 1931 it became Yangpyeong-ri Yeongdeungpo-eup Siheung-gun. Then in 1936 it joined Gyeongseong-bu becoming Yanghwajang. After liberation in 1946 Yangpyeong-dong was born. Yanghwa-dong also changed its name. The term ‘jeong’ was replaced with ‘dong’. Yangpyeong-dong’s name itself is a testament to this evolution. Today Yangpyeong-dong thrives. It’s a vibrant community part of Yeongdeungpo District. Its borders touch Yangcheon District Dangsan-dong and Munnae-dong. Schools like Dangsan Elementary Seonyoo Elementary Seonyoo Middle Han-gang Media High Seonyoo High and Gwanak High serve the area’s children. This area’s growth mirrors Seoul’s overall development. From a small village to a thriving neighborhood Yangpyeong-dong reflects centuries of change. This dynamic neighborhood continues to evolve. Yet its history remains a vital part of its identity.
