Did Yangcheon-gu always have such a modern feel? Certainly not. Yangcheon-gu, located southwest of the Han River, has a rich history, evolving from a region called “Jechapaui-hyun” during the Goguryeo age. The name Yangcheon-gu emerged in 1310 during the Goryeo dynasty. Yangcheon-gu wasn’t always a separate district. It was part of Gangseo District until 1988. The 1980s saw a significant transformation. The government initiated a housing development project, focusing on the construction of large apartment complexes. This development shaped the modern landscape of Yangcheon-gu, particularly in areas like Mok-dong, Sinjeong-dong, and Sinwol-dong. Today, Yangcheon-gu is known for its affluent residents and bustling Mok-dong area. Mok-dong is a hub of shopping, dining, and entertainment, complete with an ice rink. The area is dominated by the impressive Hyperion Towers. Completed in 2003, Tower A stands at 256 meters, making it one of the tallest residential buildings globally. At the base of these towers, you’ll find a Hyundai department store. Yangcheon-gu is also home to major broadcasting companies like CBS and SBS. Yangcheon-gu’s unique shape, resembling a puppy, inspired the annual “Happy yangcheon companion dog culture festival,” which began in 2015. It’s a testament to the district’s community spirit and its love for our canine friends. Yangcheon-gu also hosted the 1988 Olympics at the Mokdong Stadium. The baseball stadium was particularly active, hosting numerous junior games. Later, it became the home of the Nexen Heroes, a professional baseball team formed from former Hyundai Unicorns players. From ancient settlements to modern skyscrapers, Yangcheon-gu embodies a dynamic blend of history and progress.
