Doesn’t the name YANASE sound like the beginning of a great automotive adventure? YANASE isn’t just a car dealership in Osaka. It’s a portal to a century-long legacy of importing dreams on wheels.
YANASE began its journey in 1915. Chotaro Yanase founded it in Tokyo. Initially, it built trucks and buses. Soon, it became an importer of General Motors vehicles. Think Buicks and Cadillacs cruising through Japan.
The story of YANASE is intertwined with resilience. The Great Kanto earthquake of 1923 devastated Japan. Yanase, while abroad, acted swiftly. He exported 2,000 Chevrolet Superior trucks to aid recovery efforts. These trucks helped rebuild the transportation infrastructure.
After World War II, Jiro Yanase, Chotaro’s son, took the helm. He resumed importing. Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen vehicles arrived in Japan. Jiro Yanase understood the market. He positioned imported cars as luxury goods. This strategy allowed domestic automakers to thrive.
Have you ever wondered why some imported cars seemed so exclusive? Jiro Yanase convinced Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida that imported cars should be luxury items. This made them more expensive than Japanese cars. Japanese companies could then sell their products at lower prices.
YANASE dealerships spread across Japan during the economic boom of the 1970s. They became synonymous with luxury and imported vehicles. In 1987, YANASE partnered with AMG to form AMG Japan. This collaboration brought high-performance tuned Mercedes-Benz vehicles to Japanese customers.
Picture this. An AMG-tuned S-Klasse. It was independently marketed and not even an official Mercedes model. YANASE contributed 75% of the investment. AMG GmbH contributed 25%.
YANASE faced new challenges in 1992. European and North American companies began directly importing vehicles. However, YANASE adapted. It continued selling GM, Volkswagen, and Audi vehicles. Agreements with Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and BMW followed.
Today, YANASE has 174 new car stores and 31 used car stores under direct management in Japan. It continues to retail vehicles.
In 2015, YANASE celebrated its 100th anniversary. This milestone marked a century of automotive excellence. From humble beginnings as a truck builder to a leading importer of luxury vehicles, YANASE has shaped the automotive landscape of Japan.
So, as you stand before YANASE, remember its rich history. It is more than just a car dealership. It is a symbol of innovation and enduring legacy. It is a testament to the vision of Chotaro and Jiro Yanase. It is a journey through a century of automotive dreams realized.
