Once upon a time Yan Nawa was called Ban Thawai. It was a village bustling with Tavoy people. They brought water buffaloes to market. Yan Nawa District’s history is rich and fascinating. It’s a story of transformation.

Originally named Ban Thawai or Ban Khok Khwai Yan Nawa’s name reflects its past. It means ‘water buffalo pen village’. This was due to the many water buffaloes. They were brought to market by the Tavoy people. King Chulalongkorn’s reign saw it become Ban Thawai District. It was part of Phra Pradaeng province.

In 1932 Phra Pradaeng province was abolished. Yan Nawa’s northern parts joined Bangkok Province. Wat Ban Thawai was renamed Wat Yan Nawa. The district followed suit. It officially became a khet in 1972. The present-day khwaeng formed in 1975. In 1989 parts of Yan Nawa were separated. They formed Sathon and Bang Kho Laem districts. Wat Yan Nawa the temple the district’s name comes from now sits in Sathon district.

Yan Nawa’s location along the Chao Phraya River shaped its life. The river’s brackish water supported a rich ecosystem. Mangrove-like conditions thrived. This provided abundant food for the locals.

Crabs shrimp and prawns were plentiful. Giant river prawns hid in nipa palm roots. They were a delicacy. Fish were abundant too. Clown featherback climbing perch and many more species swam in the waters. The locals used their catch for dishes like fish cakes and green curry. Even wrestling halfbeaks provided entertainment. They were put in jars to fight like betta fish.

Today Yan Nawa is a vibrant district. It boasts shopping malls like Central Plaza Rama III. It also has diplomatic missions like the Libyan Embassy.
