Ever wondered why the Yamuna River holds such a special place in Agra’s heart? It is more than just a river. It is a lifeline, a sacred entity, and a silent witness to centuries of history.

The Yamuna River rises from the Great Himalayas. Its journey starts near Yamnotri in western Uttarakhand. Flowing south it passes through the Himalayan foothills. The Yamuna then enters the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It travels along the border of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

The Eastern and Western Yamuna canals branch off here. The Yamuna continues past Delhi and feeds the Agra Canal. South of Delhi it flows wholly within Uttar Pradesh. The river turns southeast near Mathura and passes Agra. It also passes Firozabad and Etawah.

Below Etawah the Yamuna gains southern tributaries. The Chambal, Sindh, Betwa, and Ken rivers join it. Finally the Yamuna meets the Ganges River near Prayagraj. This confluence is very sacred to Hindus. Annual festivals take place here. Every 12 years millions attend the Kumbh Mela.

Agra sits on the Yamuna’s banks. The river has shaped Agra’s story. The city’s history has two parts. First, the ancient city on the Yamuna’s left bank is tied to Krishna legends. Sikandar Lodi rebuilt it in 1504-1505. Second, Akbar founded the modern city in 1558 on the Yamuna’s right bank. This is the Agra we know today.

The Mughals greatly valued the Yamuna. Babur laid out India’s first formal Mughal garden named Aram Bagh near the Yamuna. It offered relaxation by the river. Akbar built the modern city on the Yamuna’s right bank. He made it a political cultural and economic hub.

But the Yamuna faces challenges. It is now one of India’s most polluted rivers. Densely populated areas release sewage directly into it. The Yamuna Action Plan started in the early 1990s to reduce pollution. It has had some success.

The Taj Mahal’s beauty is intertwined with the Yamuna. The monument stands on the riverbank. However pollution threatens the Taj Mahal. Sewage discharge into the Yamuna causes damage. Bugs attack it with green slime. The river’s pollution corrodes the Taj Mahal’s foundation.

The Yamuna’s condition deeply impacts Agra. The river needs our care. Efforts are underway to clean it and protect the Taj Mahal. The Yamuna is not just water. It is a symbol of faith history and life in Agra.
