Have you ever wondered where the spirit of yachting history lives? Right here at the Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre in Flensburg, we celebrate the timeless beauty of classic yachts. This isn’t just a museum. It is a tribute to the craftsmanship and passion that define yachting.
The Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre stands proudly in Flensburg-Fruerlund’s industrial harbor. Oliver Berking, owner of the renowned silver manufacturer Robbe & Berking, had a vision. He wanted to create a space where the legacy of classic yachting could thrive. In 2016, his vision became a reality.
Inside the Yachting Heritage Centre, prepare to be amazed. The center hosts up to four temporary exhibitions each year. These exhibitions cover various aspects of water sports and yachting history. But the heart of the center is its library. It holds the world’s largest collection of yachting literature.
Imagine browsing through 8,500 volumes. The Christmann Collection forms the core of this library. Volker Christmann spent 25 years assembling this internationally significant collection of antique yachting books. He then sold it to Oliver Berking. Every book has been digitally cataloged. This makes the Yachting Heritage Centre a vital resource for anyone interested in yachting history.
The 1,500 square meter building was designed by Flensburg architect Gunnar Carlsson. He captured the industrial charm of the harbor surroundings. The Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre includes two galleries and a museum shop. A large restaurant offers stunning harbor views.
But there is more to the Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre than just exhibitions and books. In 2019, it hosted the America’s Cup Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for the first time. Dyer Jones, Bill Trenkle and Henry Racamier were inducted. This event usually takes place at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in the USA.
Oliver Berking’s commitment to preserving maritime history extends beyond the museum. Since 2008, he has also operated a shipyard for classic wooden yachts nearby. This dedication to preserving tradition is at the core of the Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre.
The Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre focuses on life in, on and around the water. It highlights Robbe & Berking’s role in constructing, documenting and showcasing classic sailing yachts.
