Was this mosque really named after a king’s servant? We are standing here in front of the Xo’ja Zayniddin majmuasi. One of the many fascinating architectural treasures of Bukhara. Legend has it that the mosque was built by a king who was deeply impressed by the dedication and hard work of his servant, Xo’ja Zayniddin. To show his gratitude, the king decided to name the mosque in his servant’s honor. The Xo’ja Zayniddin majmuasi is not just a mosque but a complex that includes a khanaka, a hauz (pond), and the tomb of “Hoja Turk”. This tomb, nestled within a niche of the mosque, holds a special significance as its construction was forbidden during the reign of Sheibanids. Built in the first half of the 16th century, the Xo’ja Zayniddin majmuasi stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of the era. The mosque itself is a remarkable example of a mosque-khanaka, characterized by its central hall crowned with a majestic dome. The interior is a feast for the eyes, adorned with vibrant blue and red-orange hues that create a captivating ambiance. One cannot help but be mesmerized by the mosque’s intricate details. The lower walls are adorned with mosaic panels, while the upper sections and the dome boast exquisite paintings. The dome itself is a masterpiece, reminiscent of a shimmering blue and gold cup, adorned with star-shaped stalactites. The innovative use of the “kundal” technique in the interior adds a touch of grandeur and elegance, often compared to Bukhara’s traditional golden embroidery, earning it the nickname “heavenly mosque”. Over the centuries, the Xo’ja Zayniddin majmuasi has witnessed the ebb and flow of time, standing as a silent observer to the unfolding history of Bukhara. In 2009, the complex underwent a meticulous restoration, breathing new life into its ancient walls. Today, the Xo’ja Zayniddin majmuasi stands proudly alongside Uzbekistan’s many architectural gems, attracting visitors from far and wide who come to marvel at its beauty and rich history.
