Here at Xiwan Subdistrict a story unfolds of a land shaped by ancient seas and bustling with modern life. Imagine standing here thousands of years ago. This land was underwater. It was part of an ancient sea. Earth’s movements shifted. The sea floor rose. Dry land emerged.

Xiwan’s history stretches back millennia. Around 10000 years ago human ancestors lived in this area. Discoveries in nearby caves prove it. They fished hunted and gathered food. The natural resources were plentiful.

In 214 BC a significant event occurred. Emperor Qinshihuang ordered the construction of the Lingqu Canal. This canal connected two major rivers. The Xiangjiang River and the Lijiang River became linked. Xiwan transformed into a vital southern town. It connected the sea to the north and the Central Plains. Guilin’s name appeared for the first time. It came from the abundance of cinnamon here.

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties more people settled here. They built homes by the Li River. You can still see time-honored towns today. They have traditional Chinese architecture. Shiny stone or cobbled streets also remain.

During World War II the Yangtang Airfield in Guilin played a crucial role. The American Volunteer Group or Flying Tigers were stationed here. They helped China fight against the Japanese. General Claire Lee Chennault led these brave pilots. They defended southern China. They fought the Japanese transportation army at sea. The airfield expanded. It included repair facilities and a long runway. A hospital and shelters were also built. The Flying Tigers made great contributions.

In recent years former members of the Flying Tigers have returned. They remember the past and honor their comrades. A monument stands at the airport site. It symbolizes the friendship between China and the United States.

In 1973 US President Richard Nixon visited Guilin. He said no city surpasses Guilin’s beauty. In 1979 Secretary of State Herry Kissinger came. He recognized Guilin’s landscapes as realistic portraits.

Today Xiwan continues to evolve. It blends its rich history with modern development. As you explore Xiwan remember its past. From ancient seas to modern progress Xiwan remains a vibrant place. Its story continues.
