Nestled at the foot of Xiqiao Mountain, Nanhai Senior High School has quite a story to tell. Xiqiao High School, as it’s sometimes known, isn’t actually in Guangzhou anymore. It’s located in Foshan. The school has a unique ladder-like design. Imagine climbing 251 stone steps from the gymnasium to the basketball court at the top of the hill. That’s over 60 meters! Xiqiao High School was originally founded in 1907 in Guangzhou, on Xihu Road. It later moved to Xihua Road in 1910. The school officially became “Nanhai Senior High School” in 1912. The school’s journey wasn’t always easy. During the Anti-Japanese War, it had to relocate several times, to Foshan, Zhongshan, and even Macao. It eventually returned to Xihua Road in Guangzhou in 1947. However, in 1953, it merged with Guangzhou Wanshan Senior High School and became The Eleventh Senior High School in Guangzhou. Today, Nanhai Senior High School boasts a thriving community. There are over 3000 students, 241 teachers, including 80 senior teachers and even a foreign teacher. The school also has a vibrant extracurricular life. With over 30 student associations, there’s always something happening, from orienteering and debates to singing contests. And let’s not forget the school badge: a striking golden flag formed by the letters “N” and “H” set against a blue circle. It’s a symbol of the school’s rich history and enduring spirit.
